Defenx acquires Memopal

Rome, 2nd August 2016 – Defenx PLC, an emerging company in the mobile security sector, listed on the London Stock Exchange (AIM: DFX), has announced that it has completed the acquisition of Memopal, the innovative Italian cloud storage service.

Defenx has acquired 95.2% of Memopal for approximately 2.3m Euro, partly in cash and partly in shares, with the aim of developing a comprehensive solution for the protection and management of data and documents for private customers and businesses.

Memopal, founded by serial entrepreneurs Marco Trombetti and Gianluca Granero, is a sync and backup system which is able to take advantage of the similarities between saved data by compressing the information to a higher level than the market standard and making file transfers faster and more secure.

The technology underpinning Memopal is the Memopal Global File System (MGFS), which allows for the archiving of large amounts of data with the simplicity of consumer storage.

The Memopal client for file backup and synchronisation is available for all major operating systems via native apps for Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X and iOS, Linux, Android, NAS and a responsive web app, allowing access to files at any time and on any device.

Memopal has over 700,000 active users. Memopal offers a free 3GB product, and payable services starting from 500GB of space for 79 Euro a year. The products can be purchased online and through selected partners including Turk Telecom, HGST (Western Digital) and ZyXEL.

“The protection of personal and business data passes through two stages nowadays,” says former CTO and current CEO of Memopal, Gianluca Granero. “Users need to be protected from both external attacks and human errors. In recent years we have already marketed combined solutions for storage and antivirus protection with selected partners. With this acquisition by Defenx, the project scales up to new dimensions.”

Memopal will remain based in Rome within Pi Campus, a startup district and investment fund for innovative startups. Following the acquisition, Pi Campus will become one of Defenx’s major shareholders.

“This undertaking, although relatively small, is further recognition of the ability of Pi Campus to invest in talent capable of creating state of the art technical solutions worthy of international interest,” states Marco Trombetti, founder of Pi Campus and outgoing president of Memopal.

Memopal will operate as a subsidiary controlled by Defenx and will be managed by a new Board of Directors consisting of Gianluca Granero, CEO of Memopal, Philipp Prince, CFO of Defenx, and one further member still to be nominated by Defenx.

Andrea Stecconi, CEO of Defenx, comments: “Thanks to Memopal, Defenx is entering the cloud computing market, which is aligned with, complementary to and synergistic with the security market. By shifting part of our activities to Pi Campus, our group will have access to a hotbed of talent and ideas. We look forward to integrating Memopal’s products, customers and team into Defenx and thus generating added value for users of both companies, as well as for our shareholders.”
