Memopal was founded in December 2007 to create a storage platform and
distributed file system optimized for online storage. The company has received a $1 million seed investment from business angels and has 12 employees. Memopal argues that hardware devices are not eternal. DVDs and CDs are sensitive to light and sun; half of all USB sticks are destroyed in household incidents; and external disks have an average lifespan of a few years. Memopal's cloud computing technology and maintenance processes guarantee the longevity of data.
Memopal automatically and continuously backs up files on a remote server
through a secure Internet connection. Memopal's storage platform is based on MGFS (Memopal Global File System), its own distributed file system. Features include up to 100 million TBytes storable in a single file system; checksumbased archiving; native data encryption and compression; RAID 5-like geographical redundancy; native file indexing; hot-add scalability; and native hardware health monitoring.
The computer of an individual user tends to contain files the same or similar to those of other users. The checksumbased structure of MGFS and its crossfile compression algorithm, based on specialized vocabulary lowers the price per Gb and makes transfers faster and
more secure. Real-Time Sync protects a file online every time the user saves it. Versioning automatically creates a new version of a file, saving only the incremental data. Users can protect the data of more than one computer. MGFS contains an advanced semantic search engine for files
and a Content Collaboration System.
Files are all searchable with the same search engine and searches can be done using a web interface. Users can also
share any of their stored files via a download
link or email. Memopal does not slow down a computer. The software monitors how much system resources are used and adjusts to
its performance. Memopal is accessible via a browser or
WebDav. The system is localized in 10 languages and will soon be available in
40 languages.
Memopal recently moved out of private beta. The company offers a 250 GByte
backup solution for Windows desktops for $99 a year. A Developer SDK, Mac
and Linux clients will be released in June. Advanced sharing functionality
will be released in July, and an embedded semantic engine will be released in
August. Competitors include Box.net, Mozy, and Carbonite, among others. Competitive advantages include a true proprietary file system technology, real time sync backup, 1-click sharing functionality, file versioning and global communication (10 languages at present).
Marco Trombetti, CEO (previously founded and led Translated, a translation
and localization company, and created the Pi Campus, a design of an ideal work environment, where the Memopal team works to create a
new archiving system).
Gianluca Granero, CTO (previously led the technology division of Thesis, a company that produces datacenters and technological infrastructure for clients of the calibre of IBM and Procter & Gamble).
Davide De Guz, Marketing Director (previously the founder and administrator
of University.it and founded ConsultingSoft).
Roberto Ranucci, Business Development Director (previously Strategy
Senior Consultant at Accenture).
