Infected network

"The one time I lost a large amount of data was when my laptop crashed back in college. It was winter break, so in a way I was lucky. At any other time I would have lost at least one important assignment, probably more. However, it still meant I lost the electronic versions of every paper I had written in my college career up to that point (I believe I was a sophomore) and all the music I had stored on that laptop. I still miss having those papers from time to time, though the music wasn't such a big loss since I had to load everything up again anyway when I got a new laptop a year or two later.

The stupidest thing was that I lost the data because of a virus that I could have easily protected my computer against. Computer viruses would find their way into the school's system every so often, and when it was a real problem the IT department would tell everyone to download one patch or another. Since it was finals, I was too busy to do it, and of course it crashed my computer. These days I don't have to worry as much about losing valuable data to a computer crashing virus. I usually only use my computer at home, so I'm no longer connected to a large and easily infected network. I also have virus protection software that's constantly updating and sweeping my computer - the protection software at my school was only so-so.
