I lost very important data stored for thousands of hospital patients
"I lost tons of data on my PC at work. I work in a health care company's management office, so my computer had a lot of very important data stored for thousands of hospital patients. It was a few years back, before the company had integrated servers into the computer's network. So much of what I lost wasn't stored in other locations. I was working on my PC like normal, doing mostly data entry for the day, but I did notice that the computer was moving kind of slow.
And then it completely crashed. I wasn't faced with the ominous blue complete system crashing screen, but it sure felt like it. Once I finally managed to get my PC going again, to my absolute horror nearly one quarter of my files had suddenly disappeared! I was crushed! A call to the IT department brought a computer technician to start working on it.
He said he had an idea of something that might work to get back at least some of my files. He took apart my computer, snagged part of my hard drive and put it in the freezer...Yes, put it in the freezer! Miraculously, after an hour or so cooling down, he placed it back in my computer and nearly half of the missing data came back. It was amazing! I was so thankful. I couldn't thank the computer technician enough. Using the freezer to solve computer disasters, who knew?".
