I lost all of the files on my laptop
"In the summer of 2004, I became a member of the inaugural cohort of a new executive Ph.D. program in which the members of the cohort received a new tablet PC. I had never used this reasonably well know brand of laptop before, but I was excited about the tablet functions and the fact that it was “free”. (We later discovered it was not exactly free since the cost was built in to our tuition.) It wasn't long before many of us started to notice some glitches in the computer's performance. Within the first few months, many of them had to be serviced due to constant problems. Although my computer was malfunctioning, I continued to hope that the problems would eventually stop. They did not. In the fall of 2005, I lost all of the files on my laptop due to a faulty hard drive. This was devastating since I had already begun significant work on my dissertation, and all of the files related to my research as well as the chapters of the dissertation that I had already finished were on this computer. The good news was that I had been regularly saving drafts of my dissertation on a USB pen drive. The bad news was that I had not saved a copy of the latest draft in a couple of days when the hard drive crashed. In the end, only a few of the very important files on that computer could be saved. It was little consolation that I received a new hard drive, but I did successfully complete and defend my dissertation. I learned that anything as important as a dissertation should be backed up on at least two different storage devices. And, that is a lesson that I share with every doctoral student I know."
