How to recover from a crash

" A few years ago I was compiling a project for work using my home PC . The project used a number of different applications and at one point my PC crashed , although not unusual on Windows . I rebooted thinking it would be fine once I got back to the desktop. During the boot, Chkdsk stated that some files were repaired. I thought nothing more about it until I tried accessing my work and couldn't locate the files. After googling about Chkdsk, I found out that the " lost clusters " were converted into files. My initial thoughts were "What the ....?"

After more searching, I discovered that the " repaired" files would be located on the hard drive using the .CHK extension. I tried each of these files in every single application I was using at the time, but I got nowhere. I literally had to start from scratch. A valuable lesson was learnt that day. I now backup everything important, every single day. Also, if I am working on a project, I use a synchronization program . It monitors every write on a particular directory or file and makes or updates a copy on a CD-RW . I have since moved to the linux operating system, after a friend loaned me his laptop with linux on it for a few weeks.

He explained the various applications, and most importantly, how to recover from a crash . He even loaded up my files, and asked me to work on them, then deliberately crashed the OS using different techniques, including pulling the plug while running! The files were available without any work on my part, and were current to the last save before the crash! I know the last option is not one that some people would take but it works for me.
