Company backup
"I worked as an Assistant in an Engineering Department for a fairly large private company in which I wrote, edited, and basically was in charge of all aspects of the technical manuals for over ten machines that we manufactured. A gentleman was supposed to be in charge of backing up all the data from our department, but he failed to do so. Well at least with my data. We all had special folders on the server in which we would put our projects and work, so in case our computers failed we would have backup of all our documents, so we thought. I worked in the same position for over 5 years and when I arrived at work one morning, all my data was gone.
The backup tapes were supposed to contain all documents that were on the server and we were supposed to be able to pull them at least a month in the past. But my folder was not backed up on any of the tapes, so all of my work of over five years was gone and could in no way be recovered. This could have happened to all the Engineering files that ever existed, including prints and drawing of how to build the pieces of equipment that we manufactured. It could have taken years to redraw everything, and it could have a taken a very successful company down the drain because of one person being careless. I thankfully had a backup of my manuals, but still had a great deal of work that had to be done over again.
I would suggest to anyone who works for a company that has one person in charge of everyone's data to go to the CEO or owner of the company and suggest that another person be able to access this sort of data because in the blink of an eye it could be gone. I believe that all files should be written to a CD and stored in a safe, at least then you'll know that your files can be found somewhere."
