Backup Word and Excel files
"I made the mistake of buying a pc that was on sale before I did any research on the brand. It was an Emachine that I bought a little over 3 years ago. It seemed to be a good computer for around 18 months. I had loaded Word and Excel and saved my resume, names, addresses and phone numbers of everyone I knew and a number of other documents that I used for my ebay business. One day I went to turn it on and it did nothing.
I called my brother-in-law who is a computer whiz and he did some research into Emachines and it turns out that many users of them were reporting failure of the hard drive. He tried a few simple fixes, just in case it was something else- but the computer was gone. I lost all of my important saved information because it wasn't backed up or copied anywhere. Because this was my first pc, I never considered any of this could happen. Before I bought my current pc, I researched all the brands and looked at Consumer Reports for possible problems. I now back every important thing up on disc."
